Veterinary Technicians are responsible for conducting clinical work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. They perform clinical tests and diagnose medical conditions in animals. These professionals take care of small animals, such as mice, sheep, pigs, dogs, cats, monkeys, frogs, fishes, etc. They may work in animal hospitals, private clinics, and research facilities supervised by physicians or veterinarians.
Veterinary Technicians usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Examining animals.
• Providing specialized nursing care to pets.
• Sterilizing surgical equipment.
• Assisting veterinarians.
• Disinfecting work areas.
Skills
• Being able to properly handle animals.
• Having organizational skills.
• Being able to recognize rabies signs.
• Having high attention to details.
• Being physically fit.
• Having knowledge on how to use computer applications.
• Being patient.
• Having good knowledge of the animals and their habits.
• Being able to exercise independent judgment.
• Having interpersonal skills.
Education
Veterinary Technician jobs demand applicants having an Associate´s Degree in Veterinary Technology. These courses last two years and are offered by community colleges accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Programs for this area are taught in laboratory and clinical settings using live animals. There are some colleges that offer longer programs in order to provide a Bachelor´s Degree in Veterinary Technology. Students at High Schools should take courses related to math, science, and biology to gain suitable knowledge for this field. Professionals working on this area must pass the National Veterinary Technician exam to obtain a license or certification.
