Is NSTC worth it? I'd like to know your opinion! Nstc Guy Last updated by MaddoxPipelineWelder: Nov 9, 2017 View last comments
hello , I’m from Alaska and I’m looking for a pipeline welder job, but in most job offers they ask for a NSTC. Please if you are in the business let me know your opinion about it. Should I do it? Is it worth it? Have you done it? What is your review/ opinion about the course? And if you can explain a little bit about the course I’d be amazing. I have read the description but it’d be nice to know from your experience. Thanks-
Aiden:
Hey! I’m a pipe welder also in Alaska, I have done the course and I honestly recommend it. First of all more than once someone will ask you “do you have an NSTC card?” if that hasn’t happened yet. And keep in mind it’s comprised of 6 separate safety training modules that takes aprox 8 hours. Classes are taught on the same day but it’s very interesting.

The best thing about this training is that with it you are allowed to travel independently. Those who aren’t NTSC trained, must be escorted at all times by a qualified individual. SO only because of that I’d consider doing it. If you don’t you can only work in Deadhorse at the hotels, stores, post offices etc. -
Hudson:
Hello, I think you should at least look it up because sometimes you take the training though the company you are working in. And some companies have their own NSTC instructors so it’s part of your job and you’ll be paid to take it. Also think about if you are going to move from Alaska or you are going to stay there because this is not taught outside Alaska or online.

They are right both Hudson and Aiden , to be honest I went by my own and I payed for the course, they told me that not more than 5% of students are there on their own. But to be honest it’s the best decision I have ever made. I’ve been looking for a job for about 2 years. After the course, once I had the NSTC card I only had to do 1 interview and I got the job. This is something very important here. So if you are going to do this on your own I encourage you to do it! And it is not that expensive, the NSTC cost me 190$ and I also completed the H2S course which is 15$ and takes another hour. Let me know what is your final decision and good luck!!
