Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for helping licensed pharmacists to provide customer service, perform administrative duties, and prescribe medications within a pharmacy setting. They also count tablets, label bottles, receive prescription requests, and perform administrative tasks such as stocking shelves, answering phone calls, and operating cash registers. They may work at nursing homes, hospitals, retail companies, among other places.
Pharmacy Technicians usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Attending enquiry calls.
• Managing stocks.
• Preparing certain medicines.
• Dispensing prescribed drugs.
• Counseling patients about the use of medications.

People working on this field receive on-the-job training programs that can last between three and twelve months. For those who want to have better job opportunities, there are formal technician education programs offered by several organizations such as vocational schools, community colleges, military, and hospitals. These courses last from six months to two years and include laboratory and classroom work. Subjects covered by these programs include pharmacy law and ethics, pharmacy recordkeeping, pharmaceutical techniques, pharmaceutical calculations, and pharmaceutical and medical terminology.
Professionals working on this field need to be registered with the State Board of Pharmacy. Requirements for this qualification vary according to states, but they generally require an application fee and a High School Diploma. Certification for this area is voluntary and it is offered by the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
