is mainframe ruining my life? I need advice for the future! Frustrated Red Last updated by Amber: Nov 22, 2017 View last comments
Hello, this is Red here, I am 5+ Years into mainframes and I want to change. My job is really boring and there are very little chances (to not say any) for developing something new or getting promoted. I feel so frustrated; I don’t feel satisfaction when doing my job anymore and don’t feel this job is going to lead me to success. Should I switch? What are the tips you’d give a young person to help them be successful? I need inspiration/motivation/a reason to work again. Thank you

Hey Red , this is a really rough time for you right now, I understand what is going on in your head. Once you don’t feel motivated anymore is hard to want to stay working in the same rol 8 h a day + knowing you can be there forever since there are no chances to get promoted. All I cay say to you is start looking. I know you don’t know what do you want to do, but maybe if you start looking for a job you’ll find something that will inspire you. I’m sure that you’ll read something and you’ll say: THAT’S WHAT I WANT TO DO! So if you are tired of mainframes forget about it and start brand new.

Hello, I’m in a similar position, I feel now a days people start to realize that working with mainframes isn’t as cool as it used to be since there is very little new development. It’s never how you picture it , everyone thinks they’ll end up working for a mainframe R&D division when they may get the chance to do new development but the truth is that most of us end up in the back of some institution maintaining a bunch of old crap COBOL code written by someone who still thinks that 64kb is a bunch of RAM. Corporate programing will suck your soul out of you. So dude, whenever you have the chance GET OUT OF THERE. And then you’ll be successful

Hello guys I see a lot of you talking about success as if it’s a magic formula that will lead the way to 100% happiness. Well , it is not the case. To be able to change your path successfully and feel productive and happy with your future job you need to think about what drives you. That is the only way you’ll wake up motivated every damn day really to slay your work. In order to be successful you need to come up with your own definition of success. It is just money? Is a nice job position you can genuinely enjoy? Is it programming inside of IT? Is it a life out of IT? Once you have that figured out then talk to you closest relationships (friends, family etc) and let them know what your interests are. Sometimes it can be dangerous to have a bunch of different opinions on what you really want but think about it: you’ll be able to see your position from different perspectives and will make your choice clearer. Than once you truly know what success means to you go for it. Take a couple courses if necessary and enjoy your happy life !
