Mechanics are responsible for correcting failures and monitoring the functioning of different types of vehicles and machines. They quickly diagnose problems in a vehicle in order to avoid further deterioration. Once they find failures they try to repair the faulty part or replace it. These workers also carry out regular checks to avoid further breakdown. They may work at gas stations, repair shops, or in transportation companies.

Applicants then are required to have an internship or apprenticeship in order to obtain advanced knowledge and skills for future jobs. There are different careers in this field depending of the vehicle specialization, including working on commercial trucks, aircraft, motorcycles, boats, trains, automobiles, busses, among others. Training programs in this industry can last two to four years. Professionals who specialize in automobiles can obtain a certification offered by the Automotive Service Excellence. Candidates for this qualification are required to pass some examinations and have two years of experience.
