Geologists are responsible for studying the Earth and processes which shape it. They study all materials that compound this planet, including processes that affect their forms. Information obtained by these professionals is very useful for mining construction purposes and fuel extraction. They may work for government agencies in reclamation of waste land and testing of nuclear weapons.

Persons who want to be Geologists are required to have a bachelor´s or master´s degree related to this area. Students who want to work in this area in the future should take college preparatory courses in writing, science, math, communication, and geography.  Geology is the most suitable degree for this area, but environmental or Earth science can also lead to a career in geology. Course requirements include chemistry, calculus, physics, mineralogy, sedimentary petrology, crystallography, among other subjects.

Some states require that professionals working on this area have a state license. In order to obtain this qualification, candidates must meet some requirements related to experience, education, and pass an exam.
