Fashion Designers are responsible for creating several types and models of shoes, dresses, suits, and other accessories and clothing. They study trends and create designs of clothing, including fabrics and colors. These professionals may specialize in different areas such as clothing (sportswear, casual wear, maternity, children´s apparel, etc), footwear (shoes and boots), and accessory designers (hats, belts, handbags, scarves, etc). They may work in large design firms, design houses, and small companies.

Applicants for Fashion Designer jobs are required to have an Associate´s or Bachelor´s Degree in Fashion Design. Some professionals working on this field also have Degrees in Marketing, Business, or Fashion Merchandising in order to have their own retail store or business. Subjects included in Fashion courses are computer-aided design, sewing and tailoring, fashion history, textiles, color, pattern making, and the design of different types of clothing such as footwear and women´s wear. Other useful courses for this industry are mathematics, human anatomy, and psychology. A recommendation for people who want to work in this area is to study in one of the several institutions accredited by The National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Applicants for these courses must complete basic design and art courses.
