Engineering Technicians are responsible for solving technical problems in manufacturing, sales, construction, research and development, maintenance, and inspection using theories of science, mathematics, and engineering. They usually assist scientists and engineers and their duties are related to product inspection, quality control, data collection, and tests. The work of these professionals is more focused in application and has less scope than the duties of engineers.
Engineering Technicians usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Utilizing techniques to find solutions to problems.
• Making blue prints of a project.
• Assisting engineers.
• Conducting vehicle safety tests.
• Maintaining instruments.
Skills
• Having good communication skills.
• Being able to take orders.
• Having IT skills.
• Being able to work with a team.
• Having interpersonal abilities.
• Having excellent understanding about tools, materials, and appliances used in this field.
• Being able to communicate ideas to others.
• Being creative.
• Having high attention to details.
• Having math skills.
Education
Most Engineering Technician jobs require people having a postsecondary training or an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology. These courses are offered by extension divisions of Universities and Colleges, Technical Institutes, Community Colleges, and private and public Vocational-technical Schools. Employers usually prefer candidates having 2-year Associate degrees because people having less training need more time to learn suitable skills for this area. It is also recommended that candidates take as many High School Math and Science courses as possible to prepare for Engineering programs at higher levels.
Associate degree programs include college trigonometry, algebra, and one or two basic science subjects. The Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology gives accreditation to these programs.
