Civil Engineer job placements have formal education requirements including a good background in science, computers, and math. Engineering degrees focus on engineering fundamentals, science, and math for the first two years, then they have specialized subjects for the last two years. Most employers require four years of work experience and an examination as a minimum. People working on this area can gain experience through apprenticeship schemes offered by an experienced Civil Engineer. Then they must obtain a State license before they can perform as professional engineers in the private sector.
There are certifications offered by The American Society of Civil Engineers and The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers. The first certification covers basic civil engineering and the second scheme covers water infrastructure such as water treatment facilities.
